Dolly Parton Dead at 80: Country Music Legend Remembered

Legendary country music singer and songwriter Dolly Parton died at the age of 80 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, made a video announcement on Instagram on behalf of the family. Her family revealed that she died after a brief battle with cancer.

During her decades-long career, she won several awards and an honorary Oscar. She also had a successful movie career that began in 1980 when she starred in 9 to 5 alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.

According to CBN, Parton’s family revealed that she died after a brief battle with cancer. Dolly had acknowledged her declining health in a recent post on social media, and her sister, Freida Parton, had requested prayers for Dolly’s health last year, shortly after she announced that she was postponing her Las Vegas residency due to health challenges.

Parton was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in March 2025.

In the video announcement, Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver said:

“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”

“It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.”

During her successful career, which spanned decades, she won an Emmy, 11 Grammy Awards, 10 Country Music Association Awards, seven Academy of Country Music Awards, and three American Music Awards. She also earned two Academy Award nominations and received an honorary Oscar. Her movie career began in 1980 when she starred in 9 to 5 alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.

She wrote hundreds of songs throughout her career, including classics like Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, and I Will Always Love You. Her music has generated more than 100 million worldwide sales and more than 1 billion online streams. Her debut album was 1967’s Hello, I’m Dolly.

Parton was known for her poignant songwriting and her rise from poverty, living in a log cabin in the Tennessee mountains, to the height of stardom. Her faith in Christ was central to her life.

Her vibrant life was adapted into a musical titled Dolly: A True Original Musical, which premiered in Nashville in July 2025, with plans to transfer to Broadway in 2026.

“I wanted to see it done while I’m still around, to be able to oversee it and make sure that it’s done properly in a way that I would want to see it, rather than to wait till I’m gone and let somebody else decide how they think it should be,” she said at a press conference announcing the show’s premiere.
