The making of a new biblical epic reportedly experienced an unusual moment that left its filmmakers reflecting on the power of Scripture.

According to CBN News, while filming Daniel and the Fiery Furnace in India, brothers Daniel and Matthew Kooman said the weather unexpectedly changed during a scene based on Daniel 2.

For the filmmakers, the timing was particularly striking. The scene featured Mena Massoud, who plays Daniel, and Elijah Alexander, who portrays King Nebuchadnezzar. It centers on the dramatic account in which Daniel stands before the Babylonian king after Nebuchadnezzar demands an interpretation of his troubling dream.

Daniel had sought God for the revelation and was then brought before the king to explain what the dream meant. As Massoud delivered Daniel’s words from Scripture, the atmosphere on the set reportedly changed.

A Sudden Change During the Scene

According to Daniel Kooman, the production had already gone through about 25 days of preparation and filming without experiencing anything comparable. Then, as Massoud recited the portion of Daniel 2 concerning the everlasting kingdom of God, wind suddenly moved across the set.

Kooman recalled that tents behind the camera were being pushed into walls and blown around. Rain followed, along with thunder. The timing caught the filmmakers’ attention because it happened as the actor delivered the prophetic passage about God’s coming kingdom.

Describing what happened, Kooman said, “All of a sudden, the natural realm responded to those words of prophetic Scripture.”

The filmmakers interpreted the moment spiritually. Whether viewed as a remarkable coincidence or something more, it became an unforgettable part of the production’s story.

Bringing Daniel’s Story to the Big Screen

Daniel and the Fiery Furnace seeks to bring Daniel’s biblical world to a contemporary cinema audience. The film is built around the Old Testament account of Daniel, a young Hebrew who remained committed to God while living in Babylonian captivity.

The story includes some of the book of Daniel’s most recognizable moments, including Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, Daniel’s interpretation, and the famous account of the fiery furnace involving Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

The Kooman brothers have approached the project as more than a historical adventure. Their stated aim is to remain closely connected to the biblical text while presenting the story through the scale and visual language of a modern theatrical film.

The movie also draws from other books of Scripture, including Psalms, Isaiah, Habakkuk and Jeremiah. That approach reflects the filmmakers’ conviction that Daniel’s story cannot be separated from the wider biblical narrative.

When Faith Shapes the Filmmaking Process

For Daniel Kooman, the project’s spiritual dimension wasn’t limited to what happened in that particular scene. He explained that the brothers repeatedly returned to the book of Daniel as they made decisions throughout production.

Rather than treating Scripture simply as source material for a screenplay, the filmmakers said they wanted their creative choices to remain accountable to the biblical account.

“We found practically…, we couldn’t take one step on any given day without a leading or a direction from the Lord,” Kooman said. “It’s only gonna be if it honors the Word.”

That perspective has shaped the way the brothers describe the entire filmmaking process. For them, producing a biblical movie comes with a responsibility that extends beyond entertainment. The goal is to tell a compelling story while staying faithful to Scripture’s message.

A Crowdfunded Biblical Epic

The production has also received significant support from people who wanted to see biblical stories on the big screen.

According to CBN News, the movie raised approximately $1.2 million through crowdfunding. The filmmakers saw that response as evidence of interest in large-scale Christian and biblical productions.

Matthew Kooman described the support as another indication that God was involved in the project from its earliest stages.

“God was clearly behind it from the beginning,” he said.

For the brothers, the financial support was about more than funding a movie. It represented a community of people willing to contribute to the retelling of a biblical story.
