‘Do The Work’ by Rotimi Kehinde at City Chicago Church

Rotimi Kehinde

The exposition on ‘Do The Work’ by Rotimi Kehinde started on a light note as he shared from the book of Jonah 4. Jonah was sent to Nineveh to preach to the city to turn from their wicked ways. He was a prophet who was accustomed to bringing God’s Word to the people of Israel, not Gentiles. This was the case with other prophets.

Rotimi Kehinde explained that Jonah was unhappy because God sent him to the city of Nineveh in Assyria. He was angry and reluctant to go evangelizing there because he knew that God was merciful and would not execute his judgment on the city if they repented.

Rotimi Kehinde then shared the story of an Iroko tree just beside his family’s residence as a young boy. The tree was to be cut, and as the process started, his mum ordered him and his siblings out of the house because of a prompting by the Holy Spirit.

Shortly after this, the tree came crashing down on the house, just where they were a few minutes ago. Kehinde explained that his mum ordered him and his siblings out of the house for two reasons. The first was a Word from the Lord, and the second was because she loved them and did not want them hurt.

He then charged the congregation, ” Love is the baseline of how we should treat our enemies or those we do not necessarily like.” Furthermore, he explained that we must love other people because Jesus first loved us. We must forgive others’ mistakes. If Jesus loves and forgives us, then he’s ready to forgive others we do not like, too.

How to ‘Do The Work’ by Rotimi Kehinde

Rotimi Kehinde encouraged the congregation ‘to do the work’. He highlighted four ways to execute this.

  • Learn to discern God’s voice: Kehinde highlighted that even though Jonah was reluctant to do the work, he did not have a problem in discerning God’s voice. To be able to do the work, you must learn to discern God’s voice.
  • Stay planted in God’s house: To do the work, we must remain among God’s people. The scripture admonishes us in Hebrews 10:25 not to forsake the assembling of God’s people.
  • Do the work of an evangelist: Kehinde emphasized that God’s glory is revealed in our struggles. We should embrace sharing our personal stories while we reach people. In Kehinde’s words, ‘Your personal testimony is powerful.’
  • How to do the work: Just do it! Take the next step. Encourage someone. Be the light and salt God has called you to be in the world.

Rotimi Kehinde concluded the preaching on ‘Do The Work’ by encouraging the congregation to do the work of an evangelist. That is how we can reach our city! He added, ‘When you work as an evangelist, it is not about the person you are ministering to but about the next person.’ He made reference to the city of Nineveh, the city that got the reluctant preaching of Jonah. Still, those who heard Jonah became evangelists who spread the word until it came to the King, and the whole city turned to the Lord in fasting and repentance.
