Testament Movie (2025): A Modern Retelling of the Book of Acts
Testament is a modern reimagining of the book of Acts, an Angel original movie series created by Paul Syrstad, that tells the story of the Apostles who spread the Gospel and changed the course of history. The series modernises the story, retelling how the small group of believers risked everything to share the good news.

Testament Movie Series: An Angel Original Movie Series With A Modern Retelling Of The Book Of Acts
The Testament movie was well-received by the Angel Guild (a community of over one million members who help select the company’s productions). Jordan Harmon, the President of Angel Studios, says,
“Our hope is that this series, which vividly reimagines the Book of Acts, will captivate audiences in an entirely fresh way.”
The series has a brilliant cast and is rich in storytelling. It follows the early days of the church with powerful modern retelling that resonate with a contemporary audience.
The cast includes Eben Figueiredo as Saul, Charlie Beaven as Stephen, Mogali Masuku as Mary of Magdala, Tom Simper as Peter, Stuart Scudamore as Gamaliel, Yasmin Paige as Mara, and brothers Kenneth and John Omole portraying James and John Zebedee.
Testament converts events dating back 2000 years to an urgent present world while making the narrative relatable and approachable to a 21st century audience. In the series, first century items like tunics, turbans, and sandals were swapped for cardigans, suburban houses and streets, and modern cars.
About the movie’s modern preference, Syrstad said,
“I love tunics and sandals. They’re just cool, I think, but there’s a large audience that actually gets turned off by that. They think they’ve seen it before. So, reframing the story, this world that is a bit more recognisable to us is just a way to invite people to re-engage with the story in a new way.”
According to Rapzilla, Testament is an interesting modern-day version of the Book of Acts if several notable inventions had never occurred. The example illustrates the point that the Internet, computers, and guns are not used. The creator and director of the show noted that they could only modernise the story so much without losing its meaning.
Touching on Biblical accuracy, Rapzilla writes that the movie series tries to stay accurate to Biblical events while taking on creative liberties with people and narratives. For example, the Bible only describes Stephen’s involvement in the early church and his stoning; meanwhile, he is the central figure in the series.
