Hello, Holy Spirit Devotional Week 29 – Hello, Rest
Anchoring in the Spirit of Truth: Finding Rest During Torment
In the movie Get Out, Chris senses something profoundly wrong around him. His instincts scream danger, but he’s manipulated into staying, pressured to ignore his inner alarm. In Scripture, we see a similar story in King Saul, who endures torment after the Spirit of the Lord departs from him due to disobedience. Without God’s presence, Saul is left vulnerable to distress and an unsettling spirit that fills his mind with chaos.
Saul’s attempt at relief is temporary: he turns to David, whose music briefly soothes his spirit. Yet, because his heart and mind remain unaligned with God, this peace is fleeting. Without the Spirit’s grounding presence, Saul’s inner chaos returns, showing us that no human solution can replace the rest of God.
Hello Rest!
God’s Sovereignty
God allows consequences like these not out of malice but out of a desire to draw people back to Himself. Without His Spirit guiding and protecting us, we become susceptible to the torment that comes from being separated from God’s rest.
Restoring Rest: Embracing God’s Compassionate Heart
Jesus promises us a Helper—the Spirit of Truth. When we’re plagued by relentless fears or doubts, true rest doesn’t depend on our efforts or circumstances. Instead, it comes from surrendering to the Spirit, who anchors us in God’s truth. Unlike Saul, we have a Savior who made a way for the Spirit to dwell with us forever, offering a lasting rest that no trouble or lie can shake.
