Celebrating Father’s Day: 4 Important Fatherhood Lessons For Christians

SourceFather’s Day 2023 is here and as we celebrate, it is essential to reflect on some fatherhood lessons for Christians.

While we love our fathers daily, we have one day every year dedicated to celebrating them. This day is tagged “Father’s Day.” On this day, we show love to and celebrate the men in our lives, not just our biological fathers.

It is expedient that we celebrate this monumental day as Christians, we must also draw some lessons from the Bible. Doing this helps us to become better fathers, husbands, mentors, and parents. This post will highlight four important fatherhood lessons for Christians as we celebrate Father’s Day 2023.

Fatherhood Lessons to Ponder on as We Celebrate Father’s Day

A good place to begin this discussion is to first define the word “fatherhood.” Looking at this word from the layman’s definition, it is simply the “state of being a father.” Sociology Group adds some depth to this and defines fatherhood as “the state of having one or more children.” In other words, being a father is just the position of being a male parent.

With all of these definitions, one begins to wonder, “Is this all there is to fatherhood?” The scriptures give us a different picture as God, our Father, presents a well-rounded example of who a father should be. In this section, we will show you four important fatherhood lessons for Christians as we celebrate this year’s Father’s Day.

A father provides

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” – Matthew 6:31-32

One of the first things that we learn about God as our Father is that He provides. From the first chapter of the Bible, God has set this example. Before God created man and set him in the Garden of Eden, He had provided everything man needed to thrive.

Abraham didn’t call God “Jehovah Jireh” for nothing; it was because He always came through with provision. In the same way, as fathers, it is our responsibility to provide for the ones we look after. God’s provision goes beyond physical needs, He caters to our every need. What this means is that as a father, you cannot only focus on the physical needs of your family. You must be ready to meet every need that they have.

Fathers are examples

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” – Ephesians 5:25

Children learn more from observation than any other means of tutelage. They will constantly watch you and soon, they will begin to exhibit the same traits that you possess. Apostle Paul understands this, which is why he wrote to the Ephesians that husbands should love their wives. The way you act will ultimately influence your children and the people that look up to you.

Let’s take husbands loving their wives as an example. As a father, your sons watch you to see how you treat their mother and other females. This will set the example for how they will act with females and their spouses as they grow to become fathers. If you have daughters, your actions will show them what to expect from a man that loves them. Live with the mindset that you are an example to everyone around you always.

A father offers protection

The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.” – 2 Samuel 22:2-3 NLT

One very important attribute of fathers that God shows us in the scriptures is protection. When the children of Israel were leaving Egypt, God showed us how much He would protect the ones He loves. From being a pillar of cloud by day to being a pillar of fire by night and helping them to win numerous battles as they journeyed to the promised land.

As a father, you must identify the frailties of those around you and act as their protector. You don’t just protect them from external factors, you must protect them from internal factors like themselves sometimes. The truth is that you are only human and there is a limit to how much protection you can offer. However, you must do all that you can to be the rock, fortress, protector, confidant, and strength of the people in your care.

Fathers should be present

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6

Father's Day
A father should be present in the lives of those he cares about

This is probably one of the most important lessons of fatherhood that we learn from God. He is always present. God will not take His eyes off us for a moment.

As a father, you are never going to be perfect, however, you can be ever present in the lives of your children and loved ones. To be present means to be available when they need you and be actively involved in their lives. Your loved ones know that you are not perfect. They only want you to show up when they need your presence.

Conclusion

Celebrating Father’s Day this year should be different considering the lessons above. We enjoin you to look beyond what the world considers as fatherhood and focus on God’s example.
