American Bible Society: Bible Reading Surges Among Men And Gen Zs
The Bible is the best-selling book of all time, with over 5 billion copies sold worldwide to date. Apart from the hard copy, there are numerous Bible apps, and most Christians have at least one such app on their mobile devices.
The facts above suggest that more people are expected to read the Bible these days. According to CBN News, the American Bible Society recently carried out a study to find out more about how the Bible is being read today.
American Bible Society: More Younger Americans Are Reading The Bible
The first chapter of the annual report provided by the American Bible Society is titled “The Bible in America.” This chapter revealed that the number of Bible users in America increased to 41% from 38% in the previous year. Based on this information, we can deduce that about 10 million adults in the United States read the Bible at least three times outside church service during the year.
Interestingly, this increase was noticed more in young people and the male gender. According to the press release, “Millennials saw a 29% increase in Bible Use from 2024 to 2025, and men saw a 19% increase, closing the long-time gender gap in Bible Use. In recent years, Millennials and men were among the least likely to use the Bible.”
Another important discovery from this report is that in 2025, there was a deeper exploration, also known as scripture engagement. Again, the young folk led in this category. The stats show that among Gen Z, it increased to 15% this year from 11% in 2024. Millennials also experienced a shift in this category as their scripture engagement rose to 17% from 12%.
American Bible Society Chief Innovation Officer Speaks
The Chief Innovation Officer of the American Bible Society, Dr. John Plake, who is also the editor-in-chief of the State of the Bible series, has spoken about the study’s findings. In his statement, he attested to the fact that the study’s findings were notable.
In his words, “For the first time since 2021, we’re seeing an increase in both Bible Use and Scripture engagement, particularly among younger adults and in men. People are curious about the Bible and Jesus.”
He went on to state that the church needs to respond to the study’s information with innovation and creativity. Finally, he mentioned several other positive trends along with the discoveries from this study. This shows a positive trajectory occurring in other nations besides the US.
